Back To School

Back To School Routine—Not Just For Kids!

At PetU, dogs rule at school all year, but with the actual school year approaching it's time to get back in to a routine. Did you know dogs thrive on routine?  A consistent "back to school" schedule around food, training, exercise and sleep teaches your dog that you are in charge, so he can rest confidently by your side rather than being constantly on the lookout.

However, within your routine it is important to introduce new things to keep your dog interested. Here are a few ideas to help your dog be a star student this year:

Eat Balanced Meals -- Yes, even dogs need balanced meals.  Feeding your dog a high quality food like Fromm allows him to absorb more nutrients and can improve everything from his coat, to his energy and even his attitude!

Hit The Books—Just a few 5-minute mini-training sessions throughout the day will reinforce your bond and improve your dog's responsiveness to your requests the rest of the day.  If you need training ideas, a class* is a great way to lay a foundation or build on what you've already accomplished together. Then you can practice what you learned at home all week to keep your dog mentally sharp.

Exercise-- Burning energy is another key to your dog's daily routine. While spending one on one time being active with your dog is important, consider that even one day at daycare per week gives your dog the mental and physical exercise he needs to more happily fit in with your lifestyle the rest of the week. Our staff is always surprising the dogs with new games and toys while we reinforce positive behaviors throughout the day.

Field Trips—A change of scenery is always nice for your pup.  Check out pet-u.net for upcoming events where you and your pup can have some fun together!

Sleep -- Did you know dogs average 12-14 hours a sleep a day, and puppies may need even more?!  Keep your dog's bed in a comfortable place and if he's tired let him sleep. After all of the excitement of the new school year, he's bound to be dog-tired!

*New classes start Saturday 9/7. Call to sign up today – K9 Higher Education is our focus at PetU and classes fill up fast!
